Nigeria will elect a new President next year
Yesterday was my birthday, so I was out of the loop a bit with the news, but I've just caught up and discovered that the Nigerian Senate has rejected a proposed change in the constitution to allow President Olusegun Obasanjo to stand for a third term in the 2007 elections.
I'm not a political expert in any way, and coming from a Country with an elected leader in his 3rd term and a Lifetime Head of State, I don't think I have any real background to look at to judge this.
Basically, the Nigerian Constitution follows the US in permiting a president to stand for two terms only and there was a move to change this to allow President Olusegun Obasanjo to stand for a 3rd term.
Probably Nigeria would have benefitted from the stability from a 3rd term but if more improvements are to be made then another strong leader could make that happen more effectively.
It makes me think that this would be a more effective system for the United Kingdom too. But anyway, lets hope Nigerian Politics can now move on from this issue and spend more time working on the really important issues of education, health and infrastructure.
