National Geographic Features an article on the Niger Delta

Stealing links from other blogs is not a habit I like, but this article in the National Geographic, which came to my attention once again via Jeremy's blog, is worth spreading far and wide. The photos in the photo gallery will stick in my mind next time I fill my tank with Petrol.

As a side note, the company I work for has often been involved in community projects sponsored by the oil companies, some are very successful, others, especially the most recent projects have suffered delays after delays. Mostly because of Political interference as far as we can tell.

A lot of 'bottle-necks' are actually thrown into the mix to maintain the status quo by some communities in the Niger-Delta; by elements within them with an agenda. Unfortunately, it's those at the bottom of the pile that suffer the consequences. I lived in Warri once and I witnessed how some communities would rather meaningful development projects like schools and hospitals are halted (via hostile actions) so they can have the cash in a few greedy hands. The government is guilty of worsening the situation because when the communities were still open to influence through diplomacy, it lost it's credibility by not providing for them and allowed lawlessness to foment and subsequently reign. It's a vicious cycle and I fear an implosion bigger than the skeptics imagine.
