Lagos Politician Assassinated

Funsho Williams, leading member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and candidate for Lagos State Governor in the upcoming Elections in 2007, was assassinated today according to Lagos Police.

Lagos Police spokesman, Haz Iwendi said Williams who is contesting the 2007 polls in Lagos was strangled in his study about 11.00 a. m .this morning.

I don't know much about Engr. Funsho Williams, what I've read about him leads me to believe he was a decent sort of chap. Engineers usually are.

I only hope that this does not set the tone for the forthcoming elections. H.E. Governor (Alliance for Democracy (AD) party) has held Lagos State since 1999 and having sat his maximum two terms, suitors to the title are queuing up for Next Years elections. Lagos is already flooded with fly posters and billboards promoting one candidate or another.

[Update: Here's a better link to the story that's a bit contradictory to the quote above - thanks to Nnkem Ifejika]

I chuckled when I saw this:

"I don't know much about Engr. Funsho Williams, what I've read about him leads me to believe he was a decent sort of chap. Engineers usually are."

Chances are that in Nigeria, if someone regularly uses the word 'Engineer' as a formal title, they've not actually been near the coal face of engineering for years and have probably lost their 'engineering' personality.

Its funny ur comments on Engineers as decent folks, moreso if they are Nigerians. Incidentally, I am Nigerian and am an engineer. I am not sure that assessment is particularly right, recalling how my classmates behave and how wild they can become. For one, they like hanging around the girls, and making themselves heard.

I am not sure Engr Williams is any of those. He was someone who knew his job and did quite well in building structures in NIgeria, esp at Lagos. Its a pity to see him die the way he did under such strange circumstances. I do hope they bring the murderers to book, but in NIgeria, that is asking a lot. EVen the police are as confused as you or I. Lets just hope something happens.

Well, I wish you a nice time in Nigeria. I understand how you feel, but just maintain an open mind, its going to be fun afterall, and the blogging lifestyle would definitely help you catalogue the roller-coaster emotions you would definitely pass through as you live and update your databases in Lagos.... Cheers!

daf,

Thanks for your comments, I do like getting praise.

I do get some comments from people who don't quite feel like you do, but I haven't been able to publish those because of some bad language I'd prefer to keep off this site...

Maybe I'll get one I can publish soon, so people can see I don't only publish the good ones.

Megaphone of Poetry,

Thanks for your comments,

Maybe I should clarify my viewpoint. A colleague of mine (an experienced engineer) has a theory that Engineers are more likely to be honest people because their training requires the strictest adherence to the rules.

Of course, in Nigeria where buildings fall down because it rained a bit, things may not be exactly like that. However it is a theory I generally concur with because although a building may or may not have been constructed with the involvement of an engineer, it does not mean that the construction company actually followed the engineers instructions. and cut corners.

I have met a fair few Nigerians using the Engr. Title that seem to have very little involvement in the practice of Engineering. As pointed out by "atala wala wala" above.

I hope you didn't take too much offence from the comments, the more I have since found out about Engineer Funso Williams the more my first thoughts seem to be correct.
