Hi Aaron, Few days ago I found your site and I liked a lot, specially cos I am moving into Lagos next year for a couple of years. I will be placing a entertainment center with a Nigerian friend of mine. Anyway, as I am going with my actual girfriend I was wondering what are you doing to prevent from Malaria and if it possible to takes which medicine and for how long.
Thanks and all the good
I was taking Lariam tablets weekly when I first started work in Lagos. However I was told at the time not to take them for longer than one year. Despite taking them I contracted Malaria anyway.
They are expensive, taste Disgusting, have nightmarish potential side effects, and didn't even work for me so I stopped taking them.
What I do now, without doctors advice, is just keep a stock of the Artemisinin based drugs handy (available in pharmacies in Nigeria USD $4-$5) and if I have any fever symptoms take the tablets. So far I've only taken them once, and the fever disappeared overnight.
This is what many other long term expatriates I know are doing too. But you must talk to your doctor first.
oops. Made a mistake on the cost of these drugs... In my experience they would be USD $8 - $10 or GBP £4-5...
